I woke up to so many messages via Instagram and then realised that The Jamaica Observer had published a wonderful feature on me. As I prepare for my upcoming TEDx Aston University event scheduled on September 25, 2021 in Birmingham, UK, I thank each and everyone who has been nothing but supportive and encouraging.

Reid’s Tedx talk will explore our impact on children

Roman Emperor Nero once wrote that “hidden talent counts for nothing”. And that’s why the subject of tapping into untapped potential in children is so fascinating to media specialist Dr Terri-Karelle Reid, one of two Jamaicans who will speak at TEDx Aston University next month.

The other speaker will be businessman Zachary Harding.

The theme of the event is ‘Untapped’ and Reid will be speaking on “The untapped potential in raising children holistically” on September 25 at the university in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

“The overall theme for all speakers is ‘Untapped’, looking at how the world has been, how people have had to dig deep, try things that are very different…adapt, adjust,” she told Observer Online, adding “A lot of us have had to tap into different aspects of our lives in order to survive and even thrive in one of the darkest periods of our lives.

“When I was approached (by TEDx), I thought they were approaching me because of my ability to move from veterinary medicine and branch off into media and other areas but when they asked me to focus on my parenting style, I was blown away by it,” Reid said.

Where are the women in tech? What is the future of technology and how can women be an integral part of it, while getting the recognition and compensation deserved? Those are questions we sought to explore at the Caribbean Women in Tech’s “Disrupt | HER: The Future of Women in Digital” panel recently.

The session, hosted by Ingrid Riley, featured panelists including myself, Erica Simmons, Heneka Watkis-Porter and Stacey Hines. An all-women panel that represented a range of experiences in the tech space. More than one hundred women from various backgrounds, including high school and university students, freelancers and entrepreneurs, executives and digital professionals were in attendance.

Future Trends in Technology

Technology is rapidly changing, therefore being in this space means knowing what the upcoming trends are. Women also need to ensure that they are positioning themselves and enhance skills in order to capitalize on it.

Erica, the Executive Director of Centre for Digital Innovation & Advanced Manufacturing at the Caribbean Maritime University, knows a lot about tech trends. She encouraged the audience to start positioning themselves in the cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics spaces, as these are the areas that will be receiving the most attention within the next few years.

Cybersecurity in particular will be of significant importance to everyone, no matter where you are in the world. We’ve seen how devastating hacking and security breaches can be for individuals and businesses, so skills, tools and advice will be in high demand as people become more security conscious.

Expanding The Women in Tech Narrative

Another big topic of the night was about broadening the narrative about what is possible in tech and in the digital economy for women. The image we conjure up when we think about working in tech is the one we’ve seen in movies – some lone wolf in a dark room with a screen full of code. It is so much more than that!

Stacey, who started out in computer science and programmer, quickly realized that wasn’t her passion. She then transitioned to become a brand strategist, who now uses technology to accomplish many other things that don’t directly involve coding.

Heneka, who coaches entrepreneurs and business leaders, uses her podcast, Entrepreneurial You, to build value for brand and promote her business. I’m not a “techie” in the true sense of the word either, however my use of social media has become a huge driving force for my brand. Neither of these involving coding or special technical skills, and they cost little-to-nothing to execute!

Those are just a few examples of the way people are using technology to build businesses today. The fact is, technology is all around us and it’s not going away any time soon, so even if your skills aren’t directly related to technology, you can still (and absolutely should) find a way to make technology a part of your professional pursuits. Women shouldn’t be intimidated by tech but embrace it.

Knowing Your Worth

What started out as a conversation centred around women in tech itself transitioned into a much deeper conversation about valuing yourself as a woman in a male-dominated field, knowing the worth of your work and charging accordingly. Many weren’t worried about the technical aspects of their business. It was really about them wondering if they can truly achieve the success they’ve dreamed of as women in that space.

One of the biggest struggles for me on my professional journey wasn’t the transition from what I wanted to pursue versus what I ended up pursuing, it was knowing my worth and placing my value on that worth. When you are young and inexperienced and coming into yourself as a professional (especially in industries that you aren’t qualified for on paper), it is extremely difficult acknowledging, owning and monetizing your worth when you don’t even know what that is!

However, if you are excellent at what you do, you create tremendous value wherever you go. You take pride in putting energy, effort and time into your work. You invest in your professional development, you should never feel guilty about placing great value on your worth!

Many of us don’t do it because we are afraid that people won’t pay what we charge. Guess what? They absolutely will. And they will value your services a lot more because of it. If someone can’t afford you, it’s not about you. You do not have to lower your rates for them. It’s not impolite or rude to decline working with someone who can’t afford you. In fact, it’s the most respectful thing you can do…for yourself!

Here’s a clip from the event with my response.

Despite being a tech event, it really came down to women owning and claiming their power and stop asking for permission and seeking validation to be in these spaces.

So my biggest takeaway to any woman in any field, tech or otherwise, is this: Know your worth, own it, claim it and be unapologetic about it!

February 11 is recognized as Safer Internet Day around the world. Each year, FLOW Jamaica – one of Jamaica’s primary telecom giants – visits various schools to do their part in educating our youth about the pitfalls of the Internet and how to use it safely.

This year, I was invited to be a part of a panel discussion sharing safer Internet practices with over 500 high schoolers gathered at Merl Grove High School.

Social Media isn’t bad, it’s the users

I’ve heard it said that the Internet is broken, that social media has become a negative space, and while I definitely believe that there are some negative aspects of the virtual world, it’s certainly not all bad.

In fact, so many of us, myself included, use the Internet for powerful good. Safer Internet Day allows us to educate young people about the benefits of creating and cultivating communities around our interests, motivate and support others in their respective journeys, connect and collaborate with others to build our careers and find our dream jobs, and so much more. Many even put themselves through school by using social media to build businesses and find educational opportunities!

But it’s hard to deny how detrimental the misuse of the Internet can be. Cyberbullying can have significant, lasting impact on the development of our children. Increasingly, we have lost youth to human trafficking and molestation or they have lost scholarships, sponsorships, internships or job prospects due to the misuse of the internet.

In order for us to benefit from the Internet, we must understand and prepare ourselves for the dangers, and ensure that we are not ourselves contributing to the negativity that affects others online. So it was a important opportunity for me to join this panel to share my experiences and recommendations for how teens can keep themselves safe online. However, I believe the matters we discussed should be heard far beyond that room, so with that in mind, I’m sharing a few highlights from the conversation.

Safer Internet Day means Protecting Yourself from Predators

It’s very easy to get complacent online and share details of your life with friends and acquaintances, however you must always be mindful that much of what you post online is visible to anyone who wants to see it, and some of these people may not have your best interests at heart.

With this in mind, no one should reveal private information like residences, schools, etc. in public forums. You should also take extreme care in sharing your current location or where you plan to be. Refrain from sharing details of your personal life that could help others to decipher passwords and security questions, like your mother’s maiden name, your birth date, and the street you grew up on.

Safer Internet Day is about avoiding Posting Negative/Libelous Content

I always encourage people to be authentic and share their true selves online, but even when doing so, you must be mindful of what you post because it could lead to some very negative consequences.

Collecting or disseminating material that is malicious or libelous could have legal ramifications. Additionally, sharing lewd or defamatory content and photographs of yourself or others can have devastating effects on reputation, self-esteem, mental health or future career prospects.

If you happen to post something negative and you are receiving any backlash for doing so, it’s not the end of the world. However, the steps you take to rectify the situation matters. This clip below, shared by Flow Jamaica on Instagram, shares what I recommend in this scenario.

Receiving Unwanted/Unsolicited Content

One of the questions asked at the forum was how we, as avid social media users and influencers, deal with getting material we do not want to see, such as inappropriate photos or pornographic material.

My answer is simple. You have the power and the ability to say no. You have the choice to curate an online space for yourself that aligns with your values and if someone violates that, then you have the option to tell them to refrain from doing so. If the problem persists, that’s when you Report, Block, Delete. That’s what those buttons are there for, and if the need arises, don’t be afraid to use them!

Handling Trolls & Negative Influences

Trolls and attention seekers can be a nightmare to deal with on social media. They deliberately prey on people’s insecurities and force negativity into your space. Fortunately, the best way to deal with trolls is to ignore them entirely. Trolls need to be fed, and if no one is buying into the garbage they spew, they simply stop and move on.

I don’t get trolled online. I have cultivated a space of positivity and upliftment that leaves no space or vacancy for negativity. And on the rare occasion that someone comes on my page with such negativity, the community helps to flush them out way before I even get the chance to see it. Who you network with, who you communicate with has a significant impact on what you attract.

Offline Effects of Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is one of the biggest problems among children online. The ability to extend bullying from the grounds of a school compound to the Internet, which can be accessed by a much wider audience 24 hours a day, means that children are dealing with this every waking minute of their lives.

There’s a myth that when you’re suffering from cyberbullying it’s restricted to online, but it has a much greater effect in the physical world. Kids who experience cyberbullying often end up not wanting to go to go to school or socialize with their peers, which leads to poor academic performance and poor social skills that can impact their entire lives.

Try to monitor kids activities online to ensure that they are not experiencing or exhibiting such behaviour, and if they are, be sure to communicate openly with them and remove them from these platforms, if necessary, to prevent future harm.

The Internet isn’t simply “the online world” anymore. It is deeply integrated into our daily lives and can have lasting impact on our personal and professional status – some effects are more immediate than others. Just like in “the real world”, there are lots of ways to explore and grow positively, but the dangers still exist, so we must protect ourselves, and refrain from contributing to the negativity ourselves, so that we can create a safer Internet for everyone.

In December 2019, I traveled to Singapore for two weeks to speak at the Classroom Without Walls Entrepreneurship Immersion Programme, held by the amazing Dr. Ai Addyson-Zhang. In Part 1 of this post, I wrote about how I met Dr. Ai and came to be a part of the event (you can read it here). In this second and final part, I’ll share the experiences I had in Singapore and how, despite going there to share my knowledge, I came back learning so much more.

Throw everything you know about the typical conference out the window and imagine this. A 10-day immersion programme in a new, exciting country where you are surrounded by students from all ages, industries and backgrounds who all share one simple desire: to learn the life skills necessary to thrive in the globalized, connected world of the future. That’s what Dr. Ai’s Classroom Without Walls Entrepreneurship Immersion Programme was all about.

Our daily sessions were filled with amazing speakers from all over the world who not only taught the subjects they spoke on, but lived it. In my session, I shared my journey in growing a social media community in the past few years and all the lessons I learned in doing so. Here’s a quick sneak peek of my session, which I shared on Instagram.

As amazing as these sessions were – and they were amazing – stepping outside of the “classroom” was the true highlight of this experience. The choice of Singapore for this programme was not coincidental. Dr. Ai specifically chose it because she wanted her students to learn, not just from speeches and workshops held in a hotel conference room, but to see it all in action in a functional, thriving society. In many ways, Singapore itself was the classroom without walls.

Comfortable, liveable workspaces

Dubbed the “Silicon Valley of Asia”, Singapore has a thriving tech scene. As part of the ‘Classroom Without Walls’ programme, we visited the local offices of tech-giants, Hubspot and Adobe. These are businesses hard at work, building and advancing technology all over the world, so you’d think they’d be all work all the time, but it was the complete opposite. I was blown away by how they transformed their offices into spaces where employees could enjoy life and work at the same time – including fitness centers, meditation rooms and even areas for lounging and sleeping when employees needed a break.

Collaborative startup culture

We also visited the offices of a few other tech companies, including social media analytics software company, Talkwalker; CollabDeen – a 5-year old startup now valued at US$30 million; and ShopBack – another startup with a valuation of $300 million. Again, you would probably expect these companies to be protective of their knowledge and processes in order to retain a competitive advantage in the marketplace, but this is not the case at all.

The founders and managers of these companies were more than willing to share their strategies for building and growing their businesses. They believe that sharing and collaborating with others – rather than competing in closed environments – is the best way to foster development for their companies, as well as the country and the technological world overall. It was such a refreshing experience!

The best airport in the world

Taking a well-rounded approach to the learning experience, Dr. Ai of ‘Classroom Without Walls’ also included a few sightseeing excursions as part of the programme. We visited Universal Studios Singapore, which was every bit as fun as you expect a theme park to be. Yet, it paled in comparison to our visit to the best airport in the world, Changi Airport, which was an absolutely mind-blowing experience.

You’re probably thinking, “No one in their right mind goes sightseeing at an airport.” I thought so too…until I got there. Imagine walking into an airport and seeing this…

Jewel Changi Airport [Getty Images]

That’s the Rain Vortex, the world’s largest indoor waterfall – and that’s just the beginning. Every floor we visited had a unique view of the falls, load of beautiful trees and flowers and areas to relax. The airport also has a few unique gardens – one filled with cactuses, another with butterflies, and more – and a swimming pool. I was so happy we decided to visit on a day we weren’t traveling because, trust me, I would have absolutely missed my flight.

Functional design, in harmony with nature

“Carbon footprint reduction”, “conservation” and “environmentally-friendly design” aren’t just buzzwords thrown around for inspiration here, it’s built into everything Singapore does. They have no natural sources of water except rainfall, so water conservation is part of everyday life. They also conserve on electricity by utilizing sensor-activated technology for lights and electrical facilities where possible, such as in restrooms.

Just like the airport, Singapore’s other public facilities and attractions are all built to be environmentally-friendly and functional for everyone. Rather than designing for able-bodied person first, then adding features for the disabled, they design for disabled first, to ensure that these facilities are accessible to everyone. These spaces are also filled with greenery and plants, blending in seamlessly with nature, and helping to reduce the infrastructure’s impact on the environment.

It's the HQ for Southeast Asia. All their rooms have given names that bear significance. My favourite one is called "THE LITTLE RED DOT." It refers to how the nation is depicted on many maps of the World and of Asia as a RED TOP. • • The term really became mainstream after the former Indonesian President B. J. (Bacharuddin Jusuf) Habibie criticized Singapore in an article published in the Asian Wall Street Journal of 4 August 1998, where he alluded that Singapore wouldn't be of much help to anyone because of it's small size. • • Every citizen adopted the term with pride and celebrated the nation's success despite its physical size. • • Sounds like a country you know? "Wi likkle but wi tallawah." I may be small but I am powerful beyond imagination.
After coming home and sharing my experience on social media, a few of my followers pointed out how much Singapore has in common with Jamaica. Both are tiny countries. In fact, Singapore is literally referred to as a “little red dot” because of how it is typically represented on maps. Yet, they both offer the world so much more than their geographical size suggests.

Both countries also gained independence around the same time – Jamaica in 1962, Singapore in 1965. In fact, Singapore’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, visited Jamaica during that time to learn from Jamaica’s transition to self-rule. He then went back to his country to implement many of the policies that have made Singapore what it is today.

That’s where our similarities end. Despite having similar starting points and blueprints, we couldn’t be more different today. While Jamaica has a vibrant culture and beautiful landscape, we are struggling with high levels of crime and economic development, something Singapore has all figured out. Singapore has the second most prosperous economy in the world, with superb education, infrastructure, low crime rates and some of the highest wages in the world. I can’t help but wonder if it’s time to turn the tables and learn a few lessons from Singapore to cater to our own development.

Add Singapore to your bucket list

All considered, I had an absolutely thrilling experience in Singapore. I met some amazing people, saw the most beautiful sites and had a truly wonderful time sharing my knowledge with the participants of the Entrepreneurship Immersion Programme. I can’t thank Dr. Ai enough for inviting me to be a part of this journey. I’ll absolutely be returning to Singapore in the future and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an amazing travel experience.

This year I received the opportunity of a lifetime – to be one of the speakers at a conference in Singapore. But this was no ordinary conference, we were no ordinary speakers, and I think the story of how this all happened is just as important as the event experience. So before I get into all the details of the trip itself in an upcoming post, I thought I’d share just how I got this amazing chance to visit Singapore and be a part of the wonderfully unique Classroom Without Walls immersion programme.

Meeting Dr. Ai

Earlier this year, I had hosted a 2-day global marketing conference in Jamaica. One of the international speakers, Dr. Ai Addyson-Zhang, approached me afterwards and said that she was blown away by my ability to command the stage, maintain engagement and be knowledgeable about the various topics. I said thank you and we parted ways.

Soon after, she started following me across my platforms and took notice of my awesome online community and how we interacted with each other. Particularly, she had realized how quickly my following had grown on LinkedIn and Instagram, not through ads or “feeding the algorithm”, but simply sharing my knowledge and experiences and engaging authentically with my followers. This is what led Dr. Ai to invite me to speak at the 10-day Immersion Programme in Singapore on the topic “Leveraging Social Media to Become a Thought Leader“.

This is why I speak about the importance of showing up consistently off and online. I emphasize the importance of staying true to who you are, honing your craft, functioning in excellence and operating with integrity. It will open doors that your never even dreamed of.

Classroom Without Walls

To understand just how meaningful this opportunity was for me, I have to tell you about Dr. Ai and her business. Classroom Without Walls is an organization that aims to teach personal and professional development outside of the traditional books and classes.

Dr. Ai, who quit her career as a college professor to start this business, understands that, in today’s world, traditional education is simply not enough to thrive in this rapidly interconnected and disrupted world. Hence, she takes her students, of all ages and backgrounds, into environments where these skills are practiced and enables them to learn from people who are walking the walk every single day.

If the premise of her business isn’t enough to capture your heart, Dr. Ai’s bubbly, effervescent personality certainly will! Think I’m joking? Check out this video of her sharing details of the 10-Day Immersion Programme.

Leveraging Social Media to Become a Thought Leader

Before I packed my bag for the 2-week long trip to Singapore, Dr. Ai interviewed me live on LinkedIn to talk about social media, how I grew my following and engagement organically, and what I recommend others do to build their own social media presence. The video is still live on Dr. Ai’s LinkedIn page, and you can watch the full 40 minutes below.

Look out for a future post where I’ll be sharing my amazing experience in Singapore, what I spoke about and some of the spectacular offices and places we visited – including Singapore’s “Silicon Valley” and the out-of-this-world Changi Airport. It will absolutely blow your mind and have you booking your ticket right away!

What’s the economic cost of homophobia and discrimination? Try $11 billion dollars per year.

The Caribbean Policy Research Institute (CAPRI) published a report that shows that Jamaica’s oppressive anti-gay laws and discriminatory practices costs the workforce around $11 billion annually and makes the minority group three times more vulnerable to mental-health illness.

I was invited to be a panelist speaker at the “Paying for Prejudice” event, hosted by CAPRI, to share my opinion on the report and Jamaica.

One of the main things we discussed, and agreed upon, is that someone’s sexual orientation is their personal right and it is a human rights violation to use that a measure of their capacity or ability to work. By engaging in discrimination in this matter, it doesn’t just affect one individual, but the entire country (as you can see from the statistic above).

Therefore, all of us, despite our belief systems, orientation, gender, etc., need to to fight for the rights of those discriminated against, because at the end of the day, we are all HUMAN, and we all deserve the right to freedom, dignity and the ability to live FREE OF DISCRIMINATION.

Just as we speak on gender equality as not just a women’s issue, saying that men have to be a part of that discussion and fight alongside us, the same it is with discriminatory practices. Even if these actions don’t impact you individually, they affect us all as a nation, therefore it is the responsibility of all of us to call out these actions and come to the aid of those affected, because they may not be able to speak out from fear of repercussion, but you can.

We didn’t need the CAPRI report to tell us that there is a mental, physical, economic cost to discrimination, but it helped to quantify the direct and indirect impact of it on our country. I hope that now that we see the cold hard facts, we’ll work harder at changing them and making Jamaica an even better place to live and work for all our people.

One of the causes I am most passionate about is youth development. That is why I am always ready for any opportunity that allows me to inspire and connect with Jamaica’s youth and help them to achieve their dreams.

Luckily for me, I had two such opportunities recently – hosting both the National Baking Company’s Annual Education Assistance Ceremony and the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) Education Fund Scholarship Awards.

The National Baking Company’s Educational Assistance Programme provides funding to assist in the educational costs for the children of those employed to their organization. The theme of their event was “Excellence is Attainable. Level Up,” and it was truly heartwarming to see the students take that message to heart. After challenging them to be bold and fearless, one student took the challenge head on and tackled her fear of speaking in front of an audience on the spot.

The BGLC Education Fund, on the other hand, offers scholarship for tertiary education. Since it’s inception in 2014, it has made contributions exceeding $50 million towards education, and in the academic year 2019-2020, it had put forward $12.5 million to assist 250 students attending 30 tertiary institutions across the island.

It’s amazing to see two local companies playing their part in developing the upcoming generations, and I am honoured to be a part of the movement.

Here’s a look at some of the photos from both events.

Is Influencer Marketing still relevant and effective? You better believe it! It just comes down to the simple decisions that both the influencers and brands that want their services make.

A few weeks ago, I was invited to be a panelist at CoWork Ja’s Fireside Chat series discussing “Influencer Marketing: A Shift From Who to How”. Kamila McDonald, Romone Robinson, Kemar Highcon, Kristofferson Nunes and I shared some practical advice for both individuals who want to become influencers, as well as for companies wishing to engage them.

I got such great feedback from the event, I thought I’d share some of the key takeaways for anyone considering this path or already on it.

“INFLUENCERS”:

Know who you are, what you represent and what your core values are. Authenticity is the best thing you could ever choose to operate in!

After having figured out the aforementioned, know who you are serving, i.e. your audience/community. Who are you talking to and how do you plan on serving them? Have a good idea of who you are trying to attract and then LOVE your tribe/niche.

Develop a credible reputation by being consistent with your brand messaging. You cannot be everything to everyone! You can display different things about your other interests and pursuits, but they must all be rooted in your consistent brand messages.

Don’t use your audience when it is convenient. The most impactful influencers love their community members and care about their well-being. When you show up for them, you must respect and value their participation in your community. Social media is vast and noisy, be reminded that they have options. Therefore when they opt into your content, put some respect on their names!

Focus on the engagement and welcome the feedback. Don’t worry about vanity metrics such as likes and followers. Quality is better than quantity any day of the week! Often times your audience steers you in the direction and gives suggestions of how to enhance your content.

Show up consistently with your content. If you don’t take your content seriously, no one else will. Fans/followers unfollow, disengage and disconnect if your content is haphazard. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

“Be wary of the Greeks when they come bearing gifts.” As your numbers grow, you will naturally command attention (whether you like it or not) which means that brands (companies and individuals) will start to send gifts, propose collaborations, ambassadorships and possible endorsements in order to get to the captive audience you have worked so diligently to attain. Don’t be quick to accept things, don’t be quick to sell out your soul and community for brands that don’t seek to enhance your platform but rather take from it. Try to align with those who echo your sentiments or who have similar brand values. When you have a standard, your community and other brands will respect it.

If you choose to engage with a company or brand, set your terms and conditions. Remember this is your audience, you stand to lose the most if the deal goes south. Don’t have companies brand all over your page and ask for a ridiculous amount of posts if they are not paying for that level of access and exclusivity.

Be creative. Lawks, please don’t pose like staged mannequins with branded products and disconnected captions. It isn’t natural and screams ad- you know, the same ads that people are trying to skip. You know your audience best (or at least you should) so you should know how best to communicate to your audience that is mutually beneficial to your client and community.

Influencer Marketing and “BRANDS”:

Local companies are still very clueless when it comes to understanding and respecting influencer marketing. They assume that a one size-fits all non-strategy will help boost their visibility and campaign.

Where do I even begin with the companies, let me count the ways:

Actually research the term Influencer Marketing. Familiarise yourself with what it actually is before engaging “influencers”. You look ill-prepared and out of touch when you throw around words but don’t have a clue about its practical use.

Research the influencer you want to engage with in order to propose an effective campaign. Do your homework! You want to ensure that that influencer actually represents the company’s brand values as well. It will be a crisis management situation if you engage an influencer who might be popular but serves absolutely no purpose and might even tragically bring disrepute to your brand.

Do not use recycled influencers. For the love of God, please do not use the same people who are constantly rotated and recycled on social media for a variety of brands. The optics are terrible and your campaign won’t be effective because 1) your brand will probably get lost amongst all the others that the influencer is already promoting. 2) an influencer who is used by everyone literally dilutes his/her brand credibility and by extension dilutes your brand experience.

Do not just look at the vanity metrics! They don’t mean a thing. I am particularly asking for the agencies who “advise” clients to not rely solely on likes and follower numbers. Choose influencers that may even be micro-influencers who may be more effective for your client’s brand. Some people have bought those likes and followers. Trust me you don’t want to spend bucks on bots (just saying). Look at engagement and actually ask for insights before you engage. Again, quality vs quantity!

Respect others’ platforms and communities. Influencers have created content at their expense – investing time, effort, equipment, etc. to create and curate content and build their audience. Then all companies only want to do is offer them free samples or free tickets. Come again?! The same respect and budget you put into traditional marketing, make allotments for influencer marketing. Everything has a value and that value even if it can be negotiated, should be respected. Global companies do it and so should you!

Be creative. Don’t stick a product in the hand of a beautiful influencer, give them a cheesy caption to copy and paste, then brand the photo with your logo. Influencer marketing is about the soft sell, organic, relatable and hopefully authentic. Please stop using hard-sell tactics on digital platforms. Instead, come with a strategy based on your product/service, what you have researched on the influencer, and your target audience. BTW, to “pick an influencer’s brain” to conceptualize your company’s strategy comes at a cost. You pay your agencies, so pay influencers who develop creative concepts for you.

Take a look at some of the (hilarious) photos from the event

The JMMB Her Wealth seminar will cater to hundreds of women to discuss financial freedom. too many times, women are guilty of putting everyone before themselves. Women often times are the active savers in households, however, their savings are usually geared towards children’s continued education. We invest in our homes, partners and extended families but are we saving smartly? Are we investing? Are we preparing for our retirement?

I have been a customer of JMMB for years and they literally have your best interest at heart. They conceptualised the JMMB Her Wealth seminar as a way to educate women. The fact that it was a free event meant that lots of women were in a position to learn about preparing for their present and future smartly.

The JMMB Her Wealth Seminar team did a great job at securing three speakers, all women, all with different backgrounds. Patria-Kaye Aarons was a beast in the corporate world and left to start het own Sweetie business. Diana Samuels is still in the corporate world holding down her 9-5 but has a lucrative side hustle and there is Terri-Karelle Reid who recently left her 9-5 at The Gleaner Company (Media) Limited.

Each woman is still carving out her path and will have raw, honest conversations about their respective journeys to financial freedom and what that looks like for women as individuals. It is geared to be a dynamic and interactive session that will allow women of all ages and stages in life to learn about becoming more financially free.

Whether you are an intern, line staff, employer, start-up or CEO, we owe it to ourselves to do what’s in our best interest. we can’t pour from an empty cup and we wont be able to help our families we we aren’t making wiser financial decisions. It starts with knowledge and then applying that said knowledge wisely and in a manner that suits you and your lifestyle.
